Kinda weird for me to be posting on this board, but my wife reads this religiously. She is 7 days rectocele repair post op and has yet to have a bm. She's in a lot of pain and Fleet enemas don't seem to be doing the trick. At what point should I start to worry? Any suggestions for helping things along?
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
Very nice of you to be posting for your wife!
Many, many of us have experienced slow bowels after repair surgeries. It is not uncommon at all. It took me a good 7 days at least, with the help of laxative suppositories to finally do the trick, and still it was a slow and painful process. It took a good 2 weeks after that before the bowels were actually really working with normalcy.
Has she talked to her doctor? If she is doing enemas, she should be getting some kind of result, at least a bit. My doctor had recommended I use the laxative suppositories first. They did not tell me to use a enema. I really would call the doctor at this point to make sure they know what is happening if you have not done so yet. They would want to know.
Make sure she is eating a fiber rich diet, but not to go overboard. That can make her more uncomfortable now, with gas and bloating before she can make a bowel movement. Make sure she is taking stool softeners as well. Have her drink plenty of water and even try prune juice. I wish I could help more.
Keep us updated!

Much Love, Donna
Mom (47) of 2 (12 & 14). Had abdominal supracervical hysterectomy, sacralcolpoperineopexy, paravaginal repair, rectocele repair, enterocele repair in Jan. 2002 at JHU. All holding well, did develop slight central defect cystocele after repairs (only thing that had not been repaired). I can only give advice because I've been there

Suppositories are usually more effective than enemas. The pain meds alone cause bowels to slow down. Then the effect of the surgery on top of that makes pooping all too difficult.
If your wife can't stomach prune juice, try plum juice. Be sure it's chilled - easier to get down. And she should be taking stool softeners with each meal - like colace. And extra fiber like Benefiber.
I hope she's had some results by now... I really do feel her pain.
